As you all already know, Rhiannon Frater is the author of the extremely-popular (and absolutely amazing) As the World Dies trilogy, which has won a slew of rewards and a plethora of accolades over the past few years, including The Dead Letter Award, a Best Zombie Book of the Decade and a Top Ten Post Apocalyptic/Zombie book from Barnes and Noble. To say she’s had a pretty amazing journey for the past few years would be an understatement.

On October 30th of this year, Tor (publisher of many amazing fantasy and science-fiction classics, epics and other miscellaneous genres of speculative fiction) will be releasing the mass market edition of The First Days. I, along with a handful of other bloggers, have the pleasure of debuting the mass market cover to you.

So… without further ado…

All I can really say is… wow. This cover, created by David Franklin, is, quite simply, magical. From the colors, to the striking typography, to ‘the girls’ from the As the World Dies series carrying their guns and even the zombie, this cover really conveys to the reader what The First Days and the As the World Dies trilogy really is—a brutal, visceral work of apocalyptic fiction that stands apart from the crowd and leaves its own unique imprint on the genre as a whole. When I first saw this cover, I absolutely couldn’t believe it. I was blown away by everything, and it’s easy for me to say that I’ll definitely be snagging one of these up come time for its October release.

The mass market paperback release of The First Days is coming October 30th, 2012

I can’t explain how happy I am to see this.

Congrats Rhia! I hope it sells a ton (though I already know it will!)

Hi,

Chances are you’ve probably found this blog from either my Facebook page or a RSS feed. If you have, that’s good, because I want to make something clear to readers both new and old. If you found it some other way, well, strap yourself in for the short but important ride.

I don’t write young adult fiction. I do not write my novels with the intent of releasing or selling them to children, or even young adults. My books are filled with many adult themes. Violence, swearing, sexuality, profanity—you can find all this and more in pretty much all of my novels (even my well-established contemporary fiction, which could be considered something with a literary slant.) I state this fact openly because as of recently, my novella Wraethworld and my dark fantasy novel Blood have been tagged as children’s/young adult books, which is sending a completely wrong message toward the consumer market about my works. The only YA book I am writing at this current time is The Midnight Spell with Rhiannon Frater, and even then it’s only meant to be read by teenagers.

I don’t say this kind of stuff lightly. I have, in the past, written about my struggles with people mistagging or inappropriately-labeling my work as something it’s not. I do not, as I have said before, write children’s or young adult fiction (note the do not here.)

If any of you see my work, or if you are a reader who’s happened to come by and see this, please note what I’ve said above.

Thank you,
